In this work I am exploring the notion of identity in contemporary society.

Through the use of glass, found object, space and sound I am attempting to provoke awareness and a sense of questioning within the viewer. I have observed that as individuals we are often heavily influenced by the government, media and popular culture that surround's us.

Dominant forces are not a new phenomenon and each element utilizes us on mass for its own gain. Due to globalization and the development of technology, our civilized society is one where everything is accelerated, where nostalgia and our notion of the 'past' has new meaning. We have become susceptible to a state of continuous change. As postmodernist 'geographers' it is often difficult to visualize the extent to which we are being affected and manipulated, in ways both blatant and subliminal.

In a developed and democratic society everything from what we should eat and wear to where we should travel is under scrutiny. I feel that this often creates a sense of misplaced responsibility in the individual. In non-democratic and third world societies this is heightened and the use of violence as a means of exploitation is often more obvious.

Throughout history, war can be shown as the result of influencing the ideology of whole nations. Having had first hand experience in a military situation, I hope that this work will instigate awareness about the ways in which we have been controlled as individuals. In terms of referencing the Iraqi war, I am appealing to the individuals' foremost experience of a well-documented and controversial conflict.

I have made 60 glass helmets. Each helmet represents a distinct personality. As in every war, this work is full of contradiction. I use this as a method to convey my message to the audience. I hope to engage the viewer with the idea of loss through fabrication of truth.

The helmet is one of the most vital components of the soldiers' bodily protection during battle. Relating to the head, therefore alluding to the mind and individual personality, this representation of crucial preservation of life is rendered obsolete through its' fragile glass form. Utilizing the translucency of the material, I have placed partially visible paper parcels of civilian clothing underneath each helmet. I do this in an attempt to remind the viewer of the distinctive, individual lives involved and to invite the audience to think about their own identity.

Quoting the famously patriotic and inspirational 1960's speech by John F. Kennedy, the male voice attempts to provoke similar collective pride and idealism in his listeners. In order to rouse public support, such formulaic tactics are still employed by world leaders today. The integrity of the male protagonist is however questionable, as the voice stammers and struggles to relate a true sense of strength and leadership. The voice betrays a sense of frustration, discomfort and human vulnerability.

The thin line between life and death is strongly implicated within the confines of the installation. The helmets are placed at floor level forming an exact line like a military graveyard. In this way I present a personal petition to my audience, to continue to query what is being asked of us as individuals.
